Tottenham Hotspur began their preparations for the 2025/26 Premier League season on Saturday afternoon, with new manager Thomas Frank seeing his side in action for the first time against Reading. Second-half goals in the space of four minutes from Will Lankshear and Luka Vuskovic were enough to help Spurs seal the deal.
It was the first time fans got to see teenage prodigy Luka Vuskovic in action, and the towering defender impressed with an assist, a goal and a clean sheet. The big Croat could well rival the likes of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin for a spot in the squad next season, however, Spurs are also looking at another defensive addition.
Tottenham had a January deadline day bid rejected for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, but that hasn’t stopped them from pursuing him this summer. They remain interested in the England international, who has entered the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park.
The 25-year-old is unlikely to pen fresh terms with no discussions happening currently, meaning the Eagles’ best chance to get a substantial fee hinges on his sale this summer. Liverpool have been keen on bringing in Marc Guehi to continue their summer’s spending spree, but it appears that the English champions would not have a straightforward route to land him.
According to a report from The Telegraph, Tottenham are planning to rival Liverpool for Guehi. They have not ruled out making a bid for the central defender, although Liverpool remain the favourites to sign him this summer if he leaves Selhurst Park.
The English star has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League in the last few years. He has been a rock at the back for the Eagles and enjoyed another strong season, capped off by captaining his side in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City. At 25 and yet to hit his peak, the ex-Chelsea man is very much ready to play for a bigger club than Palace.
While Liverpool remain frontrunners for his signature, Tottenham have not given up hope in signing the Palace captain. The Lilywhites already have several centre-back options at Frank’s disposal, therefore, until and unless a player leaves, there is no point in acquiring the services of Guehi. Them retaining an interest in Guehi perhaps shows that the club bosses are unsure whether Romero will stay this season or not amid concrete interest from Atletico Madrid.
