While he was once hyped as the next big thing when Tottenham Hotspur signed Bryan Gil in a highly rated transfer from Sevilla, where he was a part of the Erik Lamela swap deal back in 2021, the silky winger never quite found his feet in North London, and this summer it has always looked like the Bryan Gil experiment will finally find its conclusion.
With only a year left on his contract at Hotspur Way and no future under Thomas Frank, Daniel Levy is finally ready to cut the Lilywhites losses, and that shows in the latest report. According to Ben Jacobs, Tottenham have dropped their asking price and would now accept less than £10 million for Gil this summer. But it does look low-keylike a cut-price exit for the North Londoners, but when you think about it, this one is fitting for a player who has never quite made enough noise at Hotspur Way.
Bryan Gil has no shortage of interest at Tottenham, but also there is no real urgency from any potential suitors at the moment given how Celta Vigo are keen, especially after the Spanish international reportedly offered himself to the club. But the interest only starts there, as Besiktas are circling too to take him to Turkey, while the likes of Valencia and even Girona (where Gil spent last season on loan) are said to be keeping tabs.
But the problem is still the fees; nobody is looking to meet the £12.5m option that Girona has to take Gil. And now things could change, with Jacobs revealing that Tottenham are reportedly willing to go somewhere around £10m; we can possibly see the clubs changing their stance.
Let me reiterate the fact that Bryan Gil is not a bad player. In fact, he will possibly be one of the better technical players wherever he ends up, given how he has quick feet complemented by close control alongside a vision that he can operate with in tight spaces.
But let’s be honest: playing in the English top tier just never suited him, given how it is too fast and too physical, making it too inconsistent for Gil to adapt to. And since he’s also had a few loan spells with Valencia, Sevilla, and Girona, complemented by occasional bench appearances in between at Tottenham, but none of them ever led to a breakthrough.
But now, Gil still has time to rejuvenate his career, but it’s clear that it won’t be in North London.
