Tottenham Hotspur were desperate for creative midfielders in the summer, especially post James Maddison’s season-ending knee injury. The north Londoners suffered blows in pursuit of several targets to address the No.10 conundrum.
Morgan Gibbs-White was close to joining after Spurs triggered his release clause, only for Nottingham Forest to block a move. Tottenham were in talks with Crystal Palace over the signing of Eberechi Eze, but delay to agree a fee led to arch-rivals Arsenal swooping in and snatching the player under their noses. Another player they missed out signing was Como’s Nico Paz.
Como rejected several Tottenham bids for Nico Paz in August. It was later revealed that the Argentinean starlet turned down the opportunity to join Spurs because he has a long-term plan to wear the Real Madrid jersey. Also, reports suggested back then Real Madrid had a massive role in stopping Tottenham’s proposal for the talented young playmaker.
It looks like Tottenham are back in the frame for Nico Paz despite summer transfer window’s failure to sign him. According to a report from Spanish outlet AZ, Tottenham have made a fresh enquiry to Como for Paz ahead of the winter transfer window, while Inter Milan have also expressed an interest.
Real Madrid sold Paz to Como in August 2024, and they inserted a buyback clause of €9m for the summer of 2026 and €10m for 2027. They also retain a 50% sell-on clause. The Argentinean international has been one of the top talents shining in Serie A, thriving in Cesc Fabregas’ system at Como. The 21-year-old has started the 2025/26 campaign in fantastic fashion, bagging four goals and as many assists in 11 Serie A appearances.
Paz’s qualities would enhance the squad of Thomas Frank. Spurs have been finding it difficult to unlock teams from the centre of the park, which makes the profile of Paz an ideal fit. The South American talent is capable of moving the game, providing calm and composure in tight situations and deciding matches from the No.10 role.
Thus, the Como man’s name is being linked strongly again with Tottenham. The playmaker’s fantastic performances in Serie A have led to the Lilywhites reviving their interest in him. However, Real Madrid has kept a buy-back option for some time, and that clause is now more valuable than ever.
From a Spurs perspective, the pursuit of Paz remains tricky once again. It won’t be easy for the Europa League winners to sign the Argentinean, who has set his heart on moving back to his boyhood club Real Madrid next year or perhaps in 2027. Como also remain reluctant to part ways with their valuable asset, most likely because Real have provided some sort of indication that they will trigger their buyback clause.
For now, a move for Paz does not look feasible for Tottenham.
