Tottenham Hotspur have been vying to bring in a new keeper in the upcoming summer transfer window, and the Lilywhites have shortlisted Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu as a possible transfer target for the off-season after the North Londoners’ scouts have given him top marks for his shot-stopping as well as his passing ability, according to a recent report from FussballDaten.
The report goes on to describe a probable move to Tottenham as a “dream move” despite already established links with the likes of Inter Milan, Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt.
Atubolu is seen as one of the most complete young goalkeepers in Europe right now. Many are already expecting him to become the number 1 for Germany in the years to come.
And citing his potential alongside the rising interest, Frankfurt has put a €35m price tag on his signature.
Tottenham have been looking for a long-term solution for that #1 role, with Guglielmo Vicario being linked with a possible exit in the summer, and the Lilywhites are clearly looking ahead to building more reliable foundations between the sticks.
De Zerbi has been known to want a keeper who is comfortable with the ball at their feet and can initiate attacking moves through their passing. It is not only the Tottenham manager but also the demand that comes from playing with the gloves. The demands to play as a keeper are far more than only stopping the shots. And Atubolu is built for those demands.
But Tottenham are not alone in their pursuit of Atubolu, with Serie A duo Inter and Juventus keeping a keen eye on his signing. And both of those clubs will give him an opportunity to play European football at the highest level from day one. Leverkusen and Frankfurt have also emerged as possible suitors within the Bundesliga.
If Tottenham are to stay in the Premier League, then North London as a destination becomes quite appealing for the 23-year-old. Playing at Hotspur Way would surely give him a stage to showcase his talent and fast track an opportunity to be considered for that German national team position.
But it will be interesting to see if Tottenham do put forth such a hefty bid to sign him, especially given how the North Londoners face a massive squad overhaul with investments needed in multiple positions across the pitch.
