Tottenham Hotspur chiefs are planning to renegotiate buy option in Mathys Tel’s loan deal from Bayern Munich

Tottenham Hotspur‘s main focus for the time being will be on Europa League success, ahead of their reverse fixture against Bodo/Glimt in Norway on Thursday evening.

However, as soon as the campaign gets over, attention will turn to the summer transfer window, and Spurs have a massive rebuilding job to do. Not only will there be a decision to make on the future of head coach Ange Postecoglou, but recruitment is set to play a crucial role going forward. And Mathys Tel could be a big part of the North London club’s plans next season.

Mathys Tel has not exactly lit up the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since joining on loan from Bayern Munich on the winter transfer window’s deadline day. Indeed, the forward’s return of three goals and an assist is underwhelming, and Tottenham fans certainly expected more from him.

That said, it is worth noting that the Frenchman was thrown into the deep end in a side that has been underperforming since the start of the campaign, particularly due to a crippling injury crisis. it was tough to flourish for the youngster in such circumstances, but over recent weeks, the performances of Mathys Tel has become better.

Tottenham did include a buy-option for Tel when they agreed terms with Bayern worth around £45 million, but according to an exclusive report from TBR Football, the club bosses are hoping to re-negotiate this. They are not willing to activate the buy clause in current terms.

Touted as one of the best young attackers in the world and has the potential to be a world-class player in the future, Tel’s impact at Spurs is starting to grow now. He has been trying to take advantage of opportunities afforded to him in the Tottenham first XI, with skipper Son Heung-min out injured.

The Sarcelles-born talent has divided opinion among the White Hart Lane faithful, and it is easy to see why. Watching a prospect like Tel struggling to adapt to the fast-paced and physical nature of English football in the opening months is not surprising, especially when he arrived midway through the season.

Yet, the Lilywhites want to sign him permanently but £45m would be a hefty fee for a player who is still quite a raw talent. The aforementioned report adds the Hotspur Way chiefs will attempt to reduce that fee in order to sign him, with Bayern open to sell if Tel indicates his desire to join Spurs permanently.

Tel has bags of potential and his best days are certainly ahead of him. Many will mock at the thought of the Frenchman joining permanently for a big fee, but the youngster is clearly a talented player and may well thrive under another manager.

It remains to be seen what happens with Tel, as Ange hopes to count on him until the end of the season, at least.
