Tottenham are keeping close tabs on Wolfsburg defender Konstantinos Koulierakis

Tottenham Hotspur had been looking to bring in a central defender in the past summer transfer window. And this was despite the fact that they signed youngster Kota Takai from Kawasaki Frontale and Kevin Danso’s loan from RC Lens got automatically turned into a permanent deal.

While Takai is yet to feature this season due to an injury sustained in training back in July, Danso has acted as a back-up for Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. In Romero’s injury absence in few games, Danso filled in and did a decent job. Yet, there is a lack of depth as far as the central defensive unit is concerned.

The concern among the Tottenham fans is the noticeable drop in quality when either of Romero and Van de Ven is absent, stressing a clear area that needs addressing in the January transfer window.

Tottenham keeping close tabs on Wolfsburg defender Konstantinos Koulierakis

Last season’s injury crisis exposed just how delicate the Lilywhites could become when key defenders were sidelined, and the same risk loiters now. As things stand, they are just one Romero or Van de Ven injury away from potentially derailing their progress under Thomas Frank. This is precisely why Tottenham are targeting a centre-half in the coming months.

According to an exclusive report from TBR Football, Tottenham are scouting Wolfsburg defender Konstantinos Koulierakis ahead of the January transfer window. Spurs have added the youngster to their defensive shortlist following his fine performances in the Bundesliga.

Konstantinos Koulierakis has performed admirably well since arriving at Wolfsburg from PAOK in August 2024. He had a strong debut season in the Bundesliga, making 30 appearances. The Greece international has been one of the bright spots in an otherwise disappointing ongoing campaign for Wolfsburg, who find themselves 12th in the table after nine games.

The aforementioned report adds Tottenham would actually like a left-footed player to act as Van de Ven’s cover, and Koulierakis fits that bill perfectly. However, the north Londoners are not the only ones watching him, with Liverpool and other European clubs also in contention.

“Koulierakis is attracting a lot of attention across Europe, composed and left-sided – left-footed defenders do tend to carry a bit more of a premium and he is standing out at the moment,” TBR Football senior correspondent Graeme Bailey revealed.

Koulierakis would be a smart addition to Tottenham’s ranks

Rapidly emerging as one of the Bundesliga’s standout young defenders, Koulierakis has the mixture of technical ability and physicality to cut the mustard in the Premier League. At 21, the Greek’s maturity belies his age, and he could be groomed into a top-class centre-back under the watchful eyes of Thomas Frank.

Being left-footed adds more value to the Wolfsburg starlet’s name. He’d not only act as cover for Van de Ven but also enhance the area of the pitch. There is a great demand for left-footed central defenders across Europe, and Koulierakis has shown great promise in the Bundesliga for more than a year now. Of course, with Liverpool also in desperate need of a central defender, perhaps as a potential replacement for Ibrahima Konate, Tottenham must start working behind the scenes from now if we are genuinely interested in signing Koulierakis.

The last time we raided Wolfsburg was for Van de Ven in 2023, and there is no reason why we shouldn’t recreate that trick when it comes to Koulierakis in the winter window.
