Tottenham Hotspur could consider recalling Jamie Donley from loan at Stoke City

Tottenham agreed a deal to loan out 20-year-old attacking midfielder Jamie Donley to Stoke City over the summer, with the hope that the player would gain valuable experience at the Championship level. However, the loan has not gone to plan for Spurs, as Donley has barely featured for Stoke City this season.

As per Tottenham News, Spurs are considering recalling Donley from his loan spell, as the club believes his growth and progression have stalled at Stoke City. Donley has only made six appearances in all competitions for the Potters this season.

Spurs have been hit with an injury crisis this season, with several key attackers currently sidelined. It may be difficult for Donley to break into the first team, but he could serve as a backup option and be called upon for FA Cup games later in the season.

If the recall takes place, it would likely be during the January transfer window. The club may also opt to look for a more suitable loan environment for Donley, as they primarily want him to gain senior team experience elsewhere.

Exclusively speaking about the situation with Tottenham News, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham stated:

Hopefully, he can continue getting some more minutes and some opportunities because otherwise, on 1 January, Tottenham needs to recall Donley and put him somewhere else. It’s a waste of an outstanding talent. He’s got to be playing and carry on developing after his outstanding year last year.

So I imagine they’ll be reviewing his situation carefully over November and December, and if it doesn’t change, then absolutely, another championship club will take him. No dramas and give him time.

Doney climbed the ranks at Tottenham’s youth academy and made his U-18 debut for the club in 2020. His debut for the senior team came in 2023 in a high-stakes Premier League clash against Manchester City.

The Irish attacking midfielder is known for his tenacity, finishing ability, and versatility, often dropping deeper to showcase his impressive passing range.

In the 2024–25 season, he spent time on loan at Leyton Orient, where he impressed by scoring eight goals in 52 appearances, earning the EFL Young Player of the Month and the club’s Player of the Year awards.

Spurs were in a similar situation last season, when they recalled Dane Scarlett from his loan spell at Oxford United. However, instead of departing on another loan spell, he was integrated into Ange Postecoglou’s side. Thomas Frank could follow the same route with Donley, but the 20-year-old would face significant competition ahead of him.

Can Jamie Donley fit into Thomas Frank’s side?

With Xavi Simons currently being the preferred option for Thomas Frank, and Dejan Kulusevski set to return from injury in a couple of months, Donley will have to prove his worth to Thomas Frank.

Donley has established himself as a player with great potential. Considering his game time would be limited after a potential return to Tottenham in January, it would be best for both parties if the Irish prospect is loan out elsewhere for the rest of the season.
