Tottenham could make a formal offer for Boca Junior centre-forward Miguel Merentiel

Daniel Levy is determined to win more trophies after Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League success in May.

As a result, the Spurs chairman is making plenty of changes at the club, with Thomas Frank’s appointment being the biggest one. However, the Danish tactician will need reinforcements to compete for silverware and improve the North Londoners’ performances in the Premier League next season.

With pre-season just on the horizon, the Lilywhites are already playing catch-up in the transfer market. They have to buck up and make additions to their squad, with Thomas Frank seemingly eyeing a reliable back-up for Dominic Solanke. Richarlison may get a chance to impress the new boss next season but currently his future remains up in the air. There is a big possibility Tottenham cash in on Richarlison amid interest from Everton and invest in a new centre-forward this summer.

Now, according to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Tottenham are showing ‘concrete interest’ in Boca Juniors forward Miguel Merentiel. Although they are yet to table a formal offer, it is not ruled out that the Premier League club will soon make one.

Miguel Merentiel has been catching the eye at the Club World Cup. The Uruguayan’s fantastic goal for Boca Juniors against Bayern Munich has impressed several scouts, and his overall performances have brought him on the radar of many Premier League clubs. Spurs have shown the most interest as they seek an alternative to Solanke that could bring dynamism and goals to their side.

The aforementioned report adds Boca Juniors are aware of growing interest in their star forward and will not let him leave easily. Merentiel’s stock has been soaring following his performances at the ongoing Club World Cup, and if any negotiations are initiated, it ‘reflects’ the striker’s importance within the team.

Before arriving to the Club World Cup in America, Merentiel had scored seven goals in 21 appearances across all competitions for Boca during the 2024/25 season. With his physicality and running power, the one-cap Uruguayan international could be a good option for Tottenham to come off the bench and make an impact against tiring defences.

The 29-year-old may not be an upgrade on Richarlison, but at least, he’ll stay fit if we are to go by his strong injury record. He has missed only 14 games due to injuries across the last three seasons, something which should appeal to Frank.

Boca’s chances of making it to the next round of the Club World Cup are slim, but Merentiel performs well in the final group-stage game against Auckland City later this week, the North Londoners must not hesitate to table a cheeky offer to test the Argentinean club’s resolve.
