Tottenham Hotspur ended the 2024/25 season on a sour note on Sunday with a home 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion.
Spurs did the unthinkable a week ago by winning the UEFA Europa League at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao. They beat Manchester United 1-0 in the final, ending their 17-year-long wait for a piece of silverware. Ange Postecoglou’s side also landed a spot in next season’s Champions League in the process.
Spurs’ domestic campaign was simply unacceptable as they finished 17th in the table without even touching the 40-point mark. An injury-ravaged squad never allowed any stability and cohesion to develop in the squad, leading to such an underwhelming top-flight finish. Despite the season done and dusted, it looks like the injury curse on Tottenham players is yet to be lifted.
Tottenham No.1 Guglielmo Vicario has pulled out of the Italy squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Norway and Moldova on June 6 and June 9 respectively. He suffered an unspecified injury during a training session and has withdrawn from the squad. The Italy national team released a statement, via Pazzi di Fanta, saying:
“Following the unavailability of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario due to physical reasons, the technical commissioner Luciano Spalletti has summoned the footballer Marco Carnesecchi (Atalanta) for the meeting scheduled for Saturday, May 31, that will precede the two commitments of the national team against Norway and Moldova, valid as qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup.”
Guglielmo Vicario has already had a tough season with Spurs. The glovesman suffered an ankle fracture against Manchester City in November 2024, ruling him out of action for several months. He regained full fitness in mid-February and has since been a reliable figure in goal.
The 28-year-old was one of the heroes for Tottenham in their Europa League final win over Man United. Vicario made a terrific stoppage-time save from a Luke Shaw header to keep his clean sheet intact. His command in the box and leadership quality proved clutch, as Ange Postecoglou’s boys attained European glory.
For a player who has gone through so much in recent months, it is shame to see him drop out of his national team squad following an unspecified injury. Tottenham fans will pray and hope Vicario’s injury is not serious and that he can join the squad for pre-season training in July.
Also, the Lilywhites will have the UEFA Super Cup to play on August 13 in Italy, and Vicario will be raring to be a part of the squad that takes on the PSG vs Inter Milan winner from the Champions League final.
