Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank gives injury update on Guglielmo Vicario and Wilson Odobert ahead of crunch Chelsea clash
Tottenham Hotspur had their Carabao Cup dream ended by Newcastle United in a 2-0 defeat on Wednesday night.
Goals from Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade helped the Magpies get past Spurs in the Carabao Cup fourth round at St James’ Park. Lucas Bergvall was the shining light in the defeat, but Xavi Simons struggled to find rhythm once again. Tottenham did have chances to score, but Newcastle United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale made some key saves in each half to keep his clean sheet intact.
Thomas Frank had already told in his pre-match presser that he’d make changes to his starting XI for this cup fixture. In all honesty, he was forced to make alterations due to the growing injury list. Tottenham had 11 outfield players unavailable in midweek, which is the same situation they found themselves in last season.
Archie Gray suffered a calf problem last week and has subsequently been ruled out for weeks now. The likes of Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie and Dominic Solanke have been progressing well to reach full fitness after their recent problems, but Tottenham fans eyebrows were raised when they missed a couple of names in the squad to face Newcastle.
Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and Wilson Odobert were absent from the squad against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle. This definitely left the fans in an uncertain position, especially with Guglielmo Vicario, who has been among Spurs’ standout performers since the October international break. The Italian was excellent in the goalless draw with AS Monaco in the Champions League and the Premier League win over Everton last week, keeping back-to-back clean sheets.
After the game, Thomas Frank gave an update on the duo. He calmed down fears within the Spurs fanbase regarding Vicario’s issue but admitted Wilson Odobert has a side strain and will be assessed ahead of the Chelsea game.
On Vicario: “He had a small thing that he had to be done but he’ll be ready for Chelsea,” Frank said (h/t Football London).
On Odobert: “Side strain. We need to assess him.”
Frank gave a positive injury update on Vicario, suggesting a small issue had kept him out at Newcastle but he’d ready to face Chelsea at home on Saturday in the Premier League. The 29-year-old has been in inspired form of late and will be hoping to keep his third clean sheet in a row in all competitions.
As for Odobert, he has been in and out of the team since the start of the season. The France Under-21 international has failed to cement his spot in Frank’s XI thanks to his inconsistent performances. Having suffered a side strain in the 0-0 draw with AS Monaco last week, he will be evaluated ahead of the Chelsea game.
All in all, Tottenham are in an injury crisis mode at the moment. Our gaffer had just 15 first-team players available to face Newcastle on Wednesday. We hope the injury list eases up quickly and a few key men return to the squad for the London derby against Chelsea.
