Tottenham Hotspur need to address the problems at the back in the upcoming transfer window. The Lilywhites have let in too many goals in the Premier League, and the clean sheets have become a rarity. The individual mistakes in the backline are costing the team heavily and it is also affecting the results on the pitch. Ange Postecoglou’s men are languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table due to this.
Majority of the Spurs fans would agree that the first thing that Daniel Levy needs to address in the summer is the defence. The Lilywhites have been forced to deal with several injuries to key defenders this season. That has hindered the performances on the pitch severely. First-choice centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have missed crucial parts of the season as well due to long-term injuries.
Ange Postecoglou has been forced to play inexperienced players at the back as key players have been on the sidelines for majority of the campaign. Backup defender Radu Dragusin is also out for several months after rupturing his ACL earlier this year. Spurs have had to rely on Archie Gray to play in the defence, a position he has never played at before.
Tottenham are surely going to address the defensive problems in the summer. With Cristian Romero heading towards the exit doors at N17, Daniel Levy must bring in a quality replacement to fill the defensive void left behind by the Argentina international. It was also reported earlier that Spurs were backed to sign Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi in the summer.
As per Fichajes, Spurs are fighting hard to sign the England international once the season ends. Daniel Levy believes that Marc Guehi would be the perfect player to replace Cristian Romero at N17. The 24-year-old’s contract runs until 2026, so the Eagles run the risk of losing him on a free transfer next year if no agreement is sealed in the upcoming transfer window.
The aforementioned report also adds that Tottenham are not the only ones vying for Guehi’s signature. Chelsea and Newcastle United are also interested in signing the 24-year-old as they aim to bolster their defence for next season. Levy will have to act quick if he wants to land the England international and beat the other two clubs for his signature.
Marc Guehi would be a perfect replacement of Cristian Romero. The Palace defender is a leader on the pitch and has captained the side to the FA Cup Final this season. Under Oliver Glasner, the 24-year-old has become one of the first names on the team-sheet. He has also elevated is game to a new level and is one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
Guehi would be an ideal for Spurs as well. The centre-back has good positional awareness, can play in a high line and he is also quick to fill up the space left behind. The England international is also comfortable on the ball, and tends to break the line through his accurate passes. He can play in a back three or in a back two, depending on what system the manager approaches.
