Tottenham prioritised bringing in attacking reinforcements in the summer to give Thomas Frank a good chance of building on last season’s Europa League success. The Lilywhites managed to exceed expectations in the transfer window by signing the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, and Randal Kolo Muani, showing a clear sign of intent and notifying their rivals that they are not messing around anymore.
However, the North London club failed to address one glaring issue in the summer that could come back to haunt Thomas Frank as the campaign progresses. They failed to land a new centre-back that would provide cover for Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. As we all know, both Spurs defenders are quite injury-prone and need to be rested every now and then, leaving Frank short of options to replace them during the season.
The Lilywhites have endured a positive start to the new season, and most of the plaudits should be aimed towards Van de Ven and Romero for keeping the defence intact against tricky opponents. However, it is clear to see that there is a massive drop-off in quality when either one of them is rested or taken off during a game, leaving Spurs exposed at the back.
The need for a new centre-back is imminent if Tottenham want to compete on all four fronts under Thomas Frank this season. The Lilywhites have endured a brilliant start to the new campaign this time around, and to continue that momentum, they will need to bring in reinforcements for the second half of the season in the upcoming January transfer window.
As we all know, Spurs did try to land Inter Milan defender Yann Bisseck in the summer as they looked to add more depth to their backline. However, a potential deal fell through as the Lilywhites were not willing to pay the €40m asking price for the German centre-back. Also, Bisseck made it pretty clear during the business-end of the transfer window that he was willing to fight for his place at the San Siro for the ongoing season.
That stance appears to have changed. According to Sky Sports DE (via FC Inter News), Bisseck is now open to leaving Inter in the winter after struggling for regular game time under Christian Chivu. The 24-year-old has barely featured this season, putting his chances of making Germany’s World Cup squad at risk. In search of more minutes and a fresh challenge, he is reportedly willing to move elsewhere in January.
This development could reopen the door for Tottenham. With Bisseck now eager to move, negotiations over personal terms may be more straightforward this time around. A switch to North London would offer him the chance to play in both the Premier League and the Champions League, while providing Spurs with much-needed depth in defence.
The club’s current defensive options are thin as Radu Drăgușin remains sidelined with an ACL injury, while Ben Davies, though dependable, is past his prime as a first-choice option. Bringing in a versatile defender like Bisseck could be exactly what Thomas Frank needs to complete his defensive puzzle.
