Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield combination has been the subject of much debate this season, with many wondering if the Joao Palhinha-Rodrigo Bentancur pairing leaves the side short of ball progression and creativity.
Thomas Frank has opted for Bentancur and Palhinha in the double pivot in most of the games, and they have delivered the goods. While the duo have solidified the Lilywhites’ midfield and provided sufficient protection to the defensive unit too, the lack of invention from deep has led to pedestrian build-up of attacks. That is a problem Spurs are looking to address in the January window.
A box-to-box midfielder with technical ability on the ball, invention and knack for chipping in with goals would be welcome at White Hart Lane. Recent reports suggest Rangers’ Nico Raskin has emerged as a target for Thomas Frank’s club.
Tottenham are not the only club interested in signing Nico Raskin. The Rangers midfielder is also wanted by two Serie A clubs and are weighing up January approaches.
The 24-year-old’s future at the Ibrox has been the subject of intense transfer speculation in the last two months. Raskin apparently fell out with former Rangers boss Russell Martin behind the scenes and that led to him being overlooked. Martin was sacked last month and replaced by Danny Rohl, who has reinstated Raskin into the side. He netted a goal at the weekend in the 3-0 win over Dundee.
However, according to a report from TEAMtalk, Rangers could sanction Raskin’s departure in January if they receive a bid in the region of £18-20million. The prospect of a move to Serie A appears the ‘most advanced’. A switch to Italy after almost three years in the Scottish Premiership could mark the next step in his blossoming career.
Tottenham have been an admirer of Raskin’s talent and view him as a profile to bolster their midfield unit. There is no doubt that the Lilywhites are going to face plenty of competition for the Rangers star if he becomes available. The Gers putting a price tag on him seemingly shows they are ready to listen to offers for him in the New Year, but Spurs do not appear to be the Belgium international’s priority destination.
Raskin will have a bigger and more important role at Tottenham, but the fact that he prefers a move to Serie A, complemented by two Italian clubs plotting January approaches, means it will be difficult for Frank and Co. to land him. There is a place for the tenacious, box-to-box midfielder in the Tottenham roster, whilst aligning perfectly with the club’s recruitment strategy.
Nonetheless, as things stand, with Raskin’s preferring a move to Italy, the only thing that the north London outfit can do is monitor the situation. If an opportunity arises, the Hotspur Way chiefs can pounce on his signing, but that looks unlikely as of now.
