Tottenham to battle it out with London rivals for 28-year-old La Liga star

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for the Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy.

According to a report via TeamTalk, Real Madrid are prepared to cash in on the 28-year-old defender at the end of the season and Tottenham are one of the clubs keen on him. They will face competition from London rivals Chelsea.

Tottenham already have players like Destiny Udogie, Ben Davies and Ryan Sessegnon at their disposal. It would be quite surprising if they decided to invest in another left-back. They should look to sign a talented young central defender instead who will add more depth to their side.

Tottenham are well-placed to secure Champions League qualification for the next season and they will be hoping to compete for major trophies next year. They need to plug the gaps in their squad in order to do well and signing another left-back might not be a wise decision.

With that said, they would still be in a better position to sign the player if they are truly interested. Chelsea are unlikely to secure Champions League qualification after a disappointing first half of the campaign. The defender will want to join a club capable of winning major trophies and heading to a club without Champions League football might not be appealing for him.

It will be interesting to see how the situation develops. There is no doubt that Mendy could be a useful player for most Premier League teams, but he needs to join a club where he will get regular first-team action. He cannot continue to be a squad player at this stage of his career.
