Tottenham Hotspur are practically operating with just one goalkeeper for the foreseeable future following Guglielmo Vicario’s injury. The Italian international suffered an ankle fracture in the team’s 4-0 win at the Etihad Stadium and having played through it for an hour, potentially aggravating the problem in the process, he underwent surgery which has ruled him out of action until February at least.
Fraser Forster is an experienced campaigner from the Premier League and has done a decent job in between the sticks, though he is far from a long-term option and at the age of 36, there will understandably be concerns regarding his fitness given that Tottenham will be playing a match almost every three days between now and the end of the season, subject to progress in other competitions.
Football Insider have reported that the Lilywhites are plotting a goalkeeper’s signing in January to alleviate some pressure off Ange Postecoglou’s and Fraser Forster’s shoulders. The board is expected to pursue a player to feature in between the sticks with more intent and it is likely that acquiring a fresh face for the role in between the sticks will be on top of the agendas for the winter.
Tottenhams January targets
— Tottenham Transfer News (@Bergvallisking) December 8, 2024
GK: Joan Garcia (Espanyol)/James Trafford (Burnley)/Anthony Patterson (Sunderland)
LB/LCB: Patrick Dorgu (Lecce)/ Oliver Boscagli (PSV) /Kyle Walker peters ( Southampton) / Abdukodir Khusanov (Lens)
Attack:Johnaton David/Albert Gudmundson/Tillman
It is mooted that Spurs will likely shop in the EFL Championship having identified two possible targets. Anthony Patterson of Sunderland and Burnley star James Trafford are on the club’s radar, with a transfer looking increasingly imminent as a step up to the Premier League with a practical guarantee of regular minutes will be too good a prospect to reject for either player.
While Patterson and Trafford, arguably the latter, are both fantastic players with a high potential, it remains to be seen if they are the ideal candidates for the role at Spurs. Admittedly, they are playing in an inferior league and could be overwhelmed by the prospect of playing in the Europa League as well as the other cup competitions too which Spurs are expected to realistically compete for.
Rather, a player featuring in one of the top leagues in Europe would be a better investment. That said, it will be interesting to see what Daniel Levy’s stance on the matter is given that he does prioritise looking for low-cost solutions more often than not.
