Tottenham Hotspur will need to raise money to fund moves for new players

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a truly dismal domestic campaign, one that has left fans disillusioned, the squad exposed, and serious questions looming over the club’s long-term direction. The Lilywhites currently sit in the bottom half of the Premier League table, just two places above the relegation zone. With 19 league defeats to their name, Ange Postecoglou’s side are on course to record the club’s lowest-ever points tally in a Premier League season.

The sharp decline has been the defining narrative of Tottenham’s year. What began with optimism following Postecoglou’s promising debut campaign has turned into a dramatic fall from grace. After finishing last season with renewed purpose and showing signs of tactical identity, fans had every reason to believe Spurs could push for a Champions League spot this year. Instead, the club has spiraled into chaos, plagued by injuries, inconsistency, tactical rigidity, and underperformance from key players.

The collapse has been staggering. From a team tipped to challenge the top four, Spurs now face the grim prospect of finishing as low as 17th. Supporters are left wondering what exactly went wrong for “Big Ange,” and whether he’ll still be in charge come next season. With a crucial summer window approaching, Tottenham must not only evaluate their squad and transfer strategy but also decide who will lead them into the next chapter.

“How the mighty have fallen?” is the theme for Tottenham this season. Spurs are still waiting to end their long-standing trophy drought under Daniel Levy and have now gone 17 years without silverware. However, not all is doom and gloom at N17. The North London club are in contention to win the Europa League this season and qualify for Champions League football.

Finance expert Stefan Borson has given a brutal verdict on Tottenham’s finances

It is an absolute necessity that Tottenham win the Europa League this season if they want to have any chance of signing new players. The Lilywhites have struggled in the Premier League, and that has seriously affected the club’s finances. Daniel Levy had also released a statement earlier this month, suggesting that the Lilywhites would not be able to spend a lot on new players because of the poor league campaign.

Speaking about Spurs’ finances and the need to finish the season strong, finance expert Stefan Borson told talkSPORT,

“From a budgetary perspective they’re £30m or maybe £40m down on where they’re expected to be. They could finish 17th and they probably expected seventh as a worst case – they’re ten points off and so they’re £30m off their budget for merit payments.”

Borson added,

“Daniel Levy is not in a position to put any more money in. He’s a very wealthy guy because of his holding of shares, but unless he sells those shares he doesn’t have the cash to put into the club. Unless they either raise money from one of their shareholders or sell some footballers, they won’t have the cash to pay for new footballers.”

Stefan Borson suggested that the club were not expecting to be in the bottom half of the Premier League table and the Lilywhites could lose a lot of money because of that. He also insisted that Spurs need to win the Europa League and qualify for the Champions League if they want to have any chance of signing new players without having to worry about the finances. Borson added that Spurs will have to rely on selling players or raising money from shareholders to fund new moves.

It is a tricky time to be a Tottenham fan right now. Daniel Levy has run the club into the ground. The club chairman has been more focused on the financial side of the game and has neglected the chance to improve the performances on the pitch. This has now come back to haunt Levy in more ways than one, and the fans have also grown frustrated with where the club is heading under the Englishman.
