Tottenham are currently on a three-game winless run in all competitions under Thomas Frank’s guidance. It has been a disappointing start to the new year for the Lilywhites, who have struggled to show any real signs of progress in recent weeks. They have already been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions, making it increasingly likely that they will end the current season without winning a trophy.
Frank has found it difficult to get the best out of his players. Beyond the poor results, the overall level of performance has also been underwhelming. More often than not, the North Londoners have started matches slowly, without a clear game plan in place. The defence has looked vulnerable, while injuries have prevented the attackers from staying fit and making a consistent impact.
To make matters worse, Spurs are hovering in the bottom half of the Premier League table. They currently sit 14th and have shown little sign of improvement since Frank replaced Ange Postecoglou at the helm. The Danish tactician has the lowest points-per-game ratio of any Spurs manager in the last decade, a statistic that strongly suggests he may not be the right man for the job.
As things stand, Tottenham are nowhere near the level required to compete with their rivals for European qualification. The Lilywhites have struggled to produce positive results in the Premier League, winning just two of their last 12 matches. There is a growing belief that supporters are failing to buy into Thomas Frank’s philosophy, with an increasing disconnect developing between the squad and the match-going faithful.
It is difficult to imagine where Spurs could finish in the Premier League if they continue to drop points in the weeks ahead. Journalist Ryan O’Hanlon has now offered his prediction for where the Lilywhites could end up by the end of the season, and it’s not looking good. Writing for ESPN, O’Hanlon believes the North Londoners will finish 13th.
Supporters will be hoping that this bleak prediction does not come to pass, as Tottenham cannot afford to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League in consecutive campaigns. Last season, it was clear that domestic results were not the priority. Ange Postecoglou placed his full focus on European success and committed entirely to that pursuit. While the gamble ultimately paid off, it came at a significant cost, with Spurs ending the league campaign just one place above the relegation zone.
A repeat of that scenario would be unacceptable this time around, especially as Thomas Frank has no alternative competition to prioritise. It is still January, yet Spurs have already exited both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. As a result, it is vital for the club to regroup and start delivering positive results as they attempt to build on last season’s Europa League success.
Time is quickly running out for Frank to steady the ship at N17. There is no doubt that Spurs possess a wealth of talent within their squad, but failure to secure European qualification would represent a significant setback, both on and off the pitch. Positive results are needed…and they are needed now.
