Roma legend and Italy World Cup winner Francesco Totti is facing a firestorm of controversy over an upcoming media event in Russia.

The retired forward is scheduled to appear as a guest of honour at the International RB Award in Moscow on April 8.

This is an event organised by one of the biggest Russian websites dedicated to sport and betting, so there are already posters up announcing Totti’s presence with the motto: ‘The Emperor is arriving in the Third Rome.’

Considering Russia invaded Ukraine and continues to mercilessly bomb the country, including last night’s strikes on hospitals, Totti has been bitterly criticised for accepting this invitation.

Totti slammed for plan to visit Russia

While there have been many insults on social media, there are also heartfelt appeals for him to reconsider.

“We are surprised and disappointed to learn of Francesco Totti’s possible participation in an event in Moscow in April,” said Andrea Massaroni, co-ordinator of political party +Europa.

“Totti represents for Roma, Italy and millions of people around the world much more than a sporting champion. He is a symbol of generosity, heart and positive values.

“This is why we make a sincere and affectionate appeal: Francesco, do not allow yourself to be associated with those who trample over human rights and democracy. Stay on the right side of history.”

The political tension between Russia and Italy has been particularly strong in the last couple of months, with President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella warning in a series of speeches about the threat posed by Vladimir Putin to all of Europe.

This in turn prompted an angry response from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
