Trabzonspor hoping to keep Andre Onana

Manchester United have a decision to make in the goalkeeping department this summer, after Senne Lammens made the starting spot his own in the 2025/26 season.

A first couple of seasons ridden with mistakes for Andre Onana meant United made the decision to loan their £47.2 million signing to Trabzonspor last summer, to make room for a search for a new number one.

Onana’s loan move to Turkey has proved successful so far, and there is set to be movement in the transfer market in the coming weeks and months.

Trabzonspor would like to keep Andre Onana this summer, after Manchester United told the Cameroonian goalkeeper they do not want him to return to Old Trafford, according to The Daily Mail.

Speaking in April after Onana saved three penalties in the Turkish Cup quarter-finals against Samsunspor, Trabzonspor club president Ertugrul Dogan said: ‘We love him. If the conditions are right, we want him to stay.’

Onana’s £120,000-a-week salary and extrovert personality would make it difficult to put him on the bench at Manchester United as a backup goalkeeper, The Daily Mail reports, meaning a move this summer, either permanently or another loan, is likely.

The most likely option for Onana is that he stays at Trabzonspor on loan, although there will be interest from other clubs. Manchester United will want to recoup as much of the near fifty-million pounds they spent on him in 2023 as possible, but will know this isn’t a likely probability.

Onana’s stock has only lowered since he signed for Manchester United from Inter Milan in 2023. Seen as one of the world’s best goalkeepers at the time, the Cameroonian was regarded as an excellent signing for Erik ten Hag’s Reds.

But it’s only been downhill since, and Onana is scrambling to pick up the pieces as his future remains uncertain. He has no way back in at his parent club, with Senne Lammens excelling. Trabzonspor would like his services, but a deal with Manchester United will have to be made, who will surely push for a permanent end to a disappointing time between the two parties.
