Trevoh Chalobah was considered likely to get a chance at Chelsea this season – or even in fact. He’d been on some good loans, but stepping up to the first team seemed a big jump.

The UEFA Super Cup, played while lots of players were still on holiday after the Euros, gave him a great chance to step up, and he took that chance with both hands.

But as has been revealed by Football.London, the defender still didn’t know at that point whether he would be sticking around with the first team for the rest of the season then. The transfer window was still open for him to leave, and Chelsea were still constantly being linked with other defenders.

“Even [after the Super Cup] I didn’t know what I was going to do during the season – I was just taking every game and every training as it was,” the academy graduate explains.

“It was only after the Crystal Palace – and his memorable goal – that Tuchel informed Chalobah he would be staying with Chelsea for the 2021/2022 campaign,” according to this piece.

It must have been a tense week, but what better way to seal your status as a first team squad member than with a goal on your Premier League debut?
