Thibaut Courtois has high expectations of Manchester United star Senne Lammens

Manchester United completed a late deadline day transfer to bring Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens to Old Trafford, with many expecting the 23-year-old’s arrival as a long-term solution to goalkeeping problems at Carrington.

In the end, the chiefs at M16 chose Lammens over Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez on deadline day, with the preferential offer given to the Belgian owing to his potential over Emi’s experience.

And this decision shows how United are looking to build for the future, particularly given the fact that there have been growing concerns around Andre Onana and his abilities. While Lammens may not be the finished product that Amorim is looking for just yet, given his potential, United supporters are looking at him as someone who can be developed into a first-team regular over time.

And now former Man United captain Rio Ferdinand has revealed that Real Madrid and Belgium star Thibaut Courtois has personally endorsed the Premier League heavyweight’s latest signing. Speaking on a live stream on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand went on to speak about a voice note that was sent by Courtois which offered a glowing reference from the former Chelsea man for the young keeper.

Thibaut Courtois backs Lammens to thrive in the Premier League

Courtois is one of the most respected goalkeepers in world football at the moment, and the fact that he went on to praise the raw talent that his countryman has and the fact that he thinks that Lammens will suit the Premier League would be a massive boost to how United fans want to watch him don that badge for the better part of the next decade.

Ferdinand said:

“Just so you know, that voice note was from Thibaut Courtois. He let me know about Lammens because he’s a Belgian player, and he was just giving me the heads up about what he’s like.

“He said he’s a huge talent, obviously not experienced yet, but he thinks his style will be well-suited to the Premier League as well.

“So that’s a recommendation from probably one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Thibaut Courtois. I’ll take that. I keep seeing people talk about the talent and whatnot, but the problem is: can Man United afford to wait for talent to develop at this point in time? That’s the question.”

This endorsement may end up easing a lot of doubts among fans who have been questioning the club’s strategy in goal, but this Courtois’ seal of approval can end up being valuable as Lammens steps into the spotlight at Old Trafford.

Author Opinion

The decision from United to push for bringing Lammens rather than opting for Martinez could have been driven by the fact that the latter would have been a massive financial transaction with his transfer fee and wages, but with Lammens being the younger of the two and likely more affordable, it does end up fitting this recent emphasis at M16 on building a squad structure which is more sustainable over the long term.

And while many may look at this transfer as a gamble, there already have been comparisons with David De Gea’s early years at the club, given how the Spaniard initially struggled to settle in before he went on to establish himself as a world-class keeper (this is exactly what many of the United supporters would be hoping that Lammens can follow if he is given time and support).
