Liverpool and Portugal national team star Diogo Jota tragically died in a car accident overnight in Spain. As messages continue to pour in from former teammates, managers, and Premier League clubs, UEFA has announced it will honor Jota during Portugal’s next match.
Jota had recenthelped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League — the country’s third major European title in the past decade. He was a key contributor off the bench for the national team and an important part of Liverpool’s squad for the past five years.
His death has left the football world in shock. The 28-year-old was coming off the most successful stretch of his career. At the end of May, he lifted the Premier League trophy with Liverpool. Weeks later, he celebrated again — this time with Portugal, after defeating Spain in the Nations League final. Just a week ago, he married his longtime partner, Rute, the mother of their three children — two boys and a girl.
Although Portugal’s men's national team doesn't play again until September, UEFA made a gesture of respect by holding a minute of silence before today’s UEFA Women’s Euro group phase between Portugal and Spain.
"A moment of silence will be observed at all of today’s and tomorrow’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 matches in memory of Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva who tragically passed away today." - UEFA shared on X.
On behalf of the European football community, we are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward, along with his brother André Silva.
