The U.S. men's and women's national teams kick off the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on Wednesday, July 24.

The men's team starts the festivities off with a game against France on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET. It's their first appearance in the Olympics since 2008. France are the favorites in this tournament overall — it figures that the U.S. are massive +600 underdogs in this matchup.

Meanwhile, the women's team kicks off first against Zambia as substantial -2500 favorites at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday.

The women's team doesn't have the limitation the men's team does. Decades ago, soccer at the Olympic Games was purely an amateur event. When professionals were permitted to play for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, FIFA did not want the competition competing with its World Cup.

Thus, restrictions were placed on how the men's rosters could be furnished. Since 1996, the entire team had to be under 23 years of age during the year of competition. Three exceptions are allowed, however. This year, Walker Zimmerman (the captain), Miles Robinson and Djordje Mihailovic are the over-23 roster spots.

Those same rules don't apply to the women's side, where you'll see all the typical starters you would in a World Cup. However, stalwarts in the past like Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe and Abby Wambach have all phased out of this level of competition.

The men's team ranks relatively high — behind three international staples and a Morocco squad with a lot of young talent. If you're tuning into this tournament, expect a lot of familiar faces come the 2030 World Cup.

The women's team, meanwhile, is the favorite, as they typically are — but this time around things are a lot dicier.

With no traditional stars, the U.S. team will have to depend on the likes of Mallory Swanson and Trinity Rodman to bear the front of the attacking burden.
