USMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino responds to Texas flood catastrophe

The USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino took a moment before the Gold Cup Final press conference to address the devastating floods in Texas. Over the Fourth of July weekend, central Texas was hit by one of the worst natural disasters in its recent history.

Torrential rains from the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry triggered flash floods along the Guadalupe River, especially in Kerr County. As of Sunday, the confirmed death toll has reached 86 — including 21 children — with 37 people still missing.

The towns of Kerrville, Hunt and Ingram were among the hardest hit. In just 45 minutes, the Guadalupe River surged nearly 29 feet, submerging homes, roads, and entire communities. At Camp Mystic, a historic all-girls summer camp along the river, 11 campers and one counselor are still unaccounted for.

Emergency crews have been working around the clock to locate the missing and support those forced from their homes. The sheer speed of the flooding left many with little time to react — and the path to recovery will be long and painful.

“First of all, I want to send our soul to the people in Texas, the tragic situation, and for sure, to the people that were affected — our solidarity to all the families,” Pochettino said in his opening remarks.

Gold Cup final to be held in Houston

As local authorities and first responders continue to manage the crisis, the Gold Cup final between the USMNT and Mexico is set to be played at NRG Stadium in Houston.

While no official tribute has been announced yet, both teams are expected to hold a moment of silence to honor the victims of the Texas floods — and Portuguese footballers Diogo Jota and André Silva, brothers who tragically lost their lives in a car accident last Thursday.
