Thomas Frank believes Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United was decided by the smallest of margins

Tottenham’s dreams of going all the way in the Carabao Cup ended abruptly after they crashed out of the competition at the hands of Newcastle United away from home. The Lilywhites were thoroughly outperformed and could not find a way to secure a result at St. James’ Park. The loss against the Magpies also ended the North London club’s hopes of competing on all fronts this season.

Eddie Howe’s men started the game brightly, creating several openings early on. Backup goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was called into action quickly and the Czech international made an early stop to deny Malick Thiaw his first goal for Newcastle United. However, Vicario’s understudy did not enjoy a particularly good outing as the game progressed, and was at fault for one of Newcastle’s two goals.

On the other hand, the Lilywhites were left frustrated with the match officials for not allowing Djed Spence to return to his position after the England international was done adjusting his boot. His absence in the box proved costly as Fabian Schar rose high and slotted the ball in from a Sandro Tonali cross.

Thomas Frank believes Tottenham fought well against Newcastle United

Tottenham’s weaknesses were found out and exposed by Newcastle United, as the hosts ended the North London club’s hopes of progressing in the Carabao Cup. The Lilywhites did have a few chances of their own to level the game from some quick counter-attacks, but a lack of conviction and decision-making in the final third costed them the result as they failed to find the back of the net.

Reflecting on the missed opportunity to advance to the next round, Thomas Frank shared his thoughts on the defeat against Newcastle United. Speaking in post-match presser (via Tottenham Hotspur), Frank said,

“I think it was a very even game. I think it was small margins that decided it. I think our performance was good. I think the way we played the game, especially how we built it from behind, phase one, especially phase two, I think we controlled the game much more.”

The Spurs boss added,

“So, overall, I’m happy with the performance. Of course, I’m super disappointed that we lost. I’m also super disappointed that we’re out. We would love to progress and be in the draw tonight.”

Frank believes Spurs fought tooth and nail with Newcastle United and that ‘small margins’ decided the result in the end. The Danish tactician seemed pleased with the way his team controlled the game during build-up phases away from home. That said, the ex-Brentford boss was understandably gutted to see his side eliminated as Newcastle advanced to the next round.

While the result was disappointing for Thomas Frank and Tottenham, it could prove to be a blessing in disguise. With fewer fixtures to manage amid an ongoing injury crisis at N17, the Danish tactician can now focus on maintaining the team’s strong start in the Premier League and in Europe as they aim to build on last season’s Europa League success.
