‘Very Happy’ Chelsea Star Eyeing Bundesliga Stay After Loan Spell

Borussia Dortmund is reportedly interested in keeping Ian Maatsen in their squad beyond this season. A successful loan spell away from Chelsea has helped the Dutch star reach his best form.

Maatsen started only three games for Chelsea this season before securing a loan move to Borussia Dortmund in January. Despite joining the German side mid-campaign, the 22-year-old has quickly integrated into Edin Terzic’s plans, becoming a crucial part of his side’s defensive setup.

Earlier this month, Maatsen scored for Dortmund as they defeated Atletico Madrid on their way to the Champions League semi-finals. The Dutchman’s loan deal at Signal Iduna Park expires at the end of the term but it seems the Bundesliga giants are willing to keep him beyond his current contract.

Latest Update From Fabrizio Romano

Since leaving Chelsea in January, Maatsen has developed into a regular starter at Dortmund, making 18 appearances for the Black and Yellows across all competitions.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Dutchman has a similar situation to Jadon Sancho. Both players have enjoyed impressive form since arriving at Dortmund on mid-season loans, and the club’s hierarchy is willing to keep both of them. Maatsen, who is said to be “very happy” under Edin Terzic, has a £35 million release clause in his Chelsea contract.

Maatsen’s father has confirmed reports about his son’s desire to stay with Dortmund, telling Voetbal International: “We are working on staying here. Things are not going well at Chelsea since the change of ownership.

“We’re happy at BVB, it’s a good place to be.”

European Ambitions

With Chelsea being destined to miss out on European football next season, Dortmund might be a more attractive option for Maatsen to continue his career.

On Monday, he told the Telegraph of his experience of watching Chelsea win the Champions League in 2021: “I told myself ‘one day, I want to be one of those guys to be on the biggest stage, to show the world who I am, show the quality I have’. And now I have this opportunity, it’s crazy.”

Asked about his move to Dortmund, Maatsen added: “[At Dortmund] they all believe in me that I’m a talented player who can perform at the highest level and they gave me this opportunity.

“I think it’s special for players, young players, to come to this big club like BVB and show their skills to the whole world. I’m really grateful for this opportunity.”

Back at Chelsea, the future is shrouded in uncertainty as Mauricio Pochettino could be sacked before the next season. Maatsen is also expected to face competition from Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell at the left-back position if he returns to Stamford Bridge this summer.
