Watch as de facto Como coach Cesc Fabregas warns his players promotion is ‘only the warm-up’ for the club, who return to Serie A after 21 years.

Fabregas joined as a player in the 2022-23 season and a minority shareholder, then after retirement became their youth team coach, promoted to the main job in November 2023.

As he does not have the requisite coaching badges, he had to then become officially the assistant manager to Welsh tactician Osian Roberts.

However, it was Fabregas who gave an emotional team talk in the locker room after the 1-1 draw with Cosenza proved enough to secure automatic promotion to Serie A.

Fabregas gives Como locker room speech

“First of all, congratulations, you truly had a season of champions,” said Fabregas.

“Tomorrow, training at 10. But one thing I have to say before we go out there with all the fans: build up your strength, because this year is nothing.

“This is only the warm-up. Next year, more efficiency, more work. And like how I promised and you guys wanted… Do you want to go to Ibiza?”

They had a two-point advantage over Venezia going into the final round, but at half-time it was the Lagunari who were heading for direct promotion.

Simone Verdi converted a penalty to secure a 1-1 draw with Cosenza, while Venezia saw their 1-0 lead overturned to lose 2-1 at relegation-threatened Spezia.

As their game finished earlier, Como had to wait around for news of the final whistle from the Venezia match.

The club was declared bankrupt and had to begin again from Serie D in 2017-18, climbing up the ranks and will now be in Serie A for the first time in 21 years.

London-based company SENT Entertainment Ltd took over at Como in April 2019, backed by the Hartono brothers and Djarum Foundation.
