Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini appeared to taunt his former club Inter during a post-match press conference on Wednesday: ‘Some clubs struggle to keep costs down, we’ve seen instances over the last few days.’

Atalanta won a historic Europa League title on Wednesday night, beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in a Final in Dublin.

It was the first trophy for La Dea since 1963 and the first one for Gasperini as a professional coach.

Atalanta’s win came on the same day as the official announcement that Oaktree had taken control of Inter as Steven Zhang had failed to repay a loan of nearly €400m, including interests.

Gasperini, a former Inter coach who only remained in charge of the Nerazzurri for five games in 2011, appeared to taut the Biscione during a post-match press conference last night.

“This team [Atalanta] and this club have grown with results. We’ve done so while making sure we’d balance the books or even turn a profit and that’s the most exceptional element about this club because typically in Europe and above all in Italy, clubs that do win things, we’ve seen instances over the last few days, actually struggle to keep costs down, whereas Atalanta has managed to win things while still being a financially sustainable club. This is why the club deserve great credit.”
