Viktor Gyokeres and his team are pushing for a reduced asking price as Manchester United target a potential summer deal with Sporting CP.
Gyokeres is reportedly frustrated with Sporting after believing there was an agreement that would allow him to leave for around £60 million, a figure he now feels the club is no longer honouring.
The striker is now considering going on strike to force through a move, feeling let down by Sporting’s president after a gentleman’s agreement appears to have been broken.
Sporting’s president has acknowledged that the club could accept less than the €100 million (£85m) release clause, although no official price has been set.
Reports indicate United are regularly checking in with Gyokeres as he continues to find a path out of the club.
United are preparing an offer, but Sporting have raised their demands above the €60 million initially expected by Ineos.
As reported by CaughtOffside, Gyokeres and his camp are now pushing the club to accept bids in the region of €75 million (£64m).
Although Gyokeres reportedly prefers a move to Arsenal, United still have a chance if they act quickly and put forward the right proposal.
He remains open to linking back up with Ruben Amorim in Manchester, despite United’s lack of European football following their Europa League final defeat.
However, it’s unclear if United still have the financial flexibility to move for Gyokeres after spending on Matheus Cunha and a £45m bid for Bryan Mbeumo.
With tension growing between Gyokeres and Sporting over his transfer fee, there is a possibility this situation could remain unresolved for much of the summer.
Several clubs – reportedly as many as nine – are monitoring his status and may wait until Sporting’s demands come down further.
The expectation is that Gyokeres will leave Sporting before the transfer window closes, but both his destination and final price are still unclear.
From a financial perspective, waiting until after the June 30th Profit and Sustainability Rules deadline may give United more freedom to spend.
This timeline could also allow Ineos to generate additional funds through player sales, with names like Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho potentially on the market.
