Viktor Gyokeres is on the verge of hitting a performance-related clause that Arsenal agreed to during his transfer from Sporting CP this season.
Gyokeres delivered his most impressive performance yet in the North London Derby, netting twice to help Arsenal pull off a 4-3 comeback win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
While that was welcome news for Mikel Arteta, it also caught the attention of the club’s finance team, who will have noted that an appearance-related bonus is about to be activated.
The initial deal was worth around £55m upfront, with further bonuses set to push that total closer to £63m over time. One of those add-ons looks set to be triggered soon.
Following the North London Derby, Portuguese publication O Jogo reported that Arsenal will soon need to pay Sporting CP an additional €500,000 fee.
The payment is part of the striker’s transfer terms, with one clause requiring a €500,000 payment every time Gyokeres hits 20 goal contributions.
After his brace against Tottenham, the Swedish forward now has 17 for the season and should reach that mark before long.
The 25-year-old has 15 goals and two assists in all competitions. Given his recent form in 2026, he looks set to hit the milestone fairly soon.
Arsenal won’t be too concerned about this added cost. Gyokeres is beginning to deliver exactly what they hoped for when they brought him in from Sporting last summer.
It’s been a slower process than many expected, but Gyokeres has now broken into the Premier League’s top five scorers as of matchday 27.
It’s a good sign for Arsenal, who haven’t had a player finish in the league’s top five scorers since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang did it back in 2019/20. It’s still early days, but Gyokeres is trending in the right direction.
The 27-year-old will naturally be aiming higher, though overtaking Erling Haaland might be a bit too much to ask at this stage. Still, for Arsenal fans, seeing their striker among the league leaders is exactly what they’ve been hoping for.
