Villarreal are keen on signing Tottenham loanee Bryan Gil

No one would have expected Tottenham Hotspur to endure such a torrid Premier League campaign.

The North Londoners have registered 20 losses in the Premier League this season. They are sitting just a place above the relegation zone and it is easily Spurs’ worst-ever season in the Premier League. Yet, Ange Postecoglou’s side have an opportunity to play in the Champions League next season by beating Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao.

Without or without European football, Spurs must generate funds by removing the surplus and deadwood from their squad. This includes underperforming commodities and players who are currently out on loan. And one such player who is keen on leaving White Hart Lane permanently is Bryan Gil.

Bryan Gil left Tottenham to join La Liga side Girona on a season-long loan last summer. As part of the winger’s new Spurs contract, he has had a €15m release clause inserted, and Girona have been given priority to trigger it before June 30 if they want to.

Last month, the Spaniard revealed that he has decided to leave the North London club permanently at the end of the season, with both him and Spurs having together come to this conclusion. Unfortunately, Gil’s season prematurely ended in March that led to him undergoing surgery on his right knee. Prior to his knee surgery, he had racked up three goals and as many assists in 25 league appearances for Girona.

Now, according to a report from Spanish news outlet El Desmarque, Villarreal have entered the race for Gil’s signature. They have identified the Spanish winger as one of their main targets to improve the squad for 2025/26 season.

Marcelino’s side are fifth in the table, three points behind fourth placed Athletic and three ahead of sixth placed Real Betis. A fifth-place finish in La Liga this season would guarantee a spot in the Champions League, and Villarreal’s main objective remains that with three games left.

Gil has no future at Tottenham, but with Girona in no financial position to activate his €15m buy option, he is set to return to N17 this summer. The aforementioned report adds Villarreal now seek to sign the 24-year-old from Spurs as his asking price is more affordable to them, given his contractual situation.

Gil and Tottenham are set to go separate paths this summer. Should Villarreal qualify for the Champions League, they could prove an attractive destination for the Spaniard, who appears to be keen on continuing to play in La Liga.
