Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-Min Son managed to win his first major trophy with the club after winning the Europa League on Wednesday night. The South Korea international has been through a lot of ups and downs at N17 since arriving in 2015. But now the 32-year-old finally has a European trophy to show for all the heart-breaks endured in the last decade.
Spurs managed to beat Manchester United 1-0 on the night in an enthralling final at the San Mames Stadium. The Lilywhites managed to take the lead in the first half, thanks to a scrappy goal by Brennan Johnson. But Ange’s men were pushed on the backfoot by the Red Devils in the second half, and United came close to scoring multiple times late in the game.
Micky van de Ven’s goal-line clearance was the highlight of the second half for the Tottenham fans. The acrobatic clearance off the line was as good as a goal at the other end. Another memorable moment in the second half came when Luke Shaw’s goal-bound header was spectacularly saved by Guglielmo Vicario in stoppage time. The Lilywhites gave their all to get over the line and win the Europa League.
If there is one player that deserved to win the final, it was Spurs captain Heung-Min Son. The South Korea international has come within touching distance of winning a major trophy at N17 several times. But for one reason or the other, the 32-year-old has always fallen short of the mark over the years.
However, Son managed end the trophy curse on Wednesday night as Tottenham won the Europa League. When asked to talk about how he was feeling, Heung-Min Son told TNT Sports (as transcribed by the BBC),
“Let’s say I’m a legend. why not? Only today! 17 years nobody has done it, so today let’s say with amazing players probably a legend of the club. This is what I’ve always dreamed for. Today is the day it happened. I am the happiest man in the world.”
The Spurs legend added,
“When you look at the whole season there will always be some situation you have a tough time but we as players always stuck together. I felt the pressure. I wanted it so badly. The last seven days I was dreaming about this game every night. It finally happened and I can sleep easy now!”
Heung-Min Son suggested that he always dreamed of winning silverware with Tottenham. The Spurs captain also added that the players stuck together after a tough season and there was pressure to perform in the final. But Son insisted that he was desperate to win the game and the 32-year-old was also dreaming about lifting the Europa League trophy leading up to the game.
Winning the Europa League has ensured that Tottenham will play Champions League football next season. As far as Heung-Min Son is concerned, the South Korean is still facing an uncertain future at N17. If the 32-year-old is all set to leave for pastures new, then he can leave the North London club with his head held high.
