Watford officially re-sign Manchester United goalkeeper
USA TODAY Sports via Reuters Connect

Manchester United’s goalkeeping department has undergone a serious reshuffle this summer, with plenty of movement both in and out of Old Trafford.

Andre Onana has departed on a season-long loan to Trabzonspor, while Altay Bayindir has also left the club, joining Celta Vigo on loan for the 2026/27 campaign.

Karl Darlow arrived on a free transfer to provide senior back-up to number one Senne Lammens, with veteran Tom Heaton retained as third choice.

It leaves Michael Carrick with a settled pecking order between the posts heading into the new season, even after such a turbulent summer for the position.

That kind of squad reshuffling isn’t unique to the men’s side, with United’s Women’s team also managing plenty of change in their own goalkeeping ranks.

Now, one of the club’s academy-developed goalkeepers is heading out on loan for further first-team experience.

Watford officially re-sign Manchester United goalkeeper

Watford have confirmed, via their website, the signing of Safia Middleton-Patel on a season-long loan from Manchester United.

It’s a return to Vicarage Road for the 21-year-old, who spent the second half of the 2023/24 season with the Hornets, making 6 appearances in the second tier.

A Welsh international, Safia Middleton-Patel came through United’s academy before signing her first professional contract in 2023, and put pen to paper on a new three-year deal with the club last year.

She has also had loan spells away from Old Trafford with Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City and Coventry United, building up senior experience along the way.

Middleton-Patel made her United first-team debut against Newcastle United in December 2024, and went on to feature on three occasions last season.

Competition for game time has been fierce at Old Trafford, with American international Phallon Tullis-Joyce currently first choice, and United also bringing in German goalkeeper Janina Leitzig from Leicester City on a deal running until June 2029.

The loan move to Watford gives Middleton-Patel the chance to gain regular football this season, as the Hornets compete in Barclays Women’s Super League 2.
