Wayne Rooney’s name has always been a household one since he rose to fame with Everton and then established himself as a club legend at Manchester United.

After a glittering playing career for club and country, the former England and Manchester United captain called time on his playing days at 35 years old in 2021, closing the book on 366 goals in 884 appearances and a medal haul that includes five Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Since retiring, Rooney has moved through the dugout with spells at Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle, while adding studio work and appearances to his post-playing portfolio. He has also laced up the boots on occasion, featuring in Soccer Aid and taking part in Manchester United Legends fixtures, reminders that the competitive spark still burns.

Now, he’s keen to return to the pitch as talkSPORT report that Wayne Rooney is understood to be keen on making an appearance for Wythenshawe Vets, the Manchester-based side whose all-star Sunday league squad has been turning heads.

The veterans outfit, who play in the Cheshire Veterans Football League for over-35s, have already fielded Premier League winners Danny Drinkwater and Joleon Lescott, with the likes of Steven Ireland, Maynor Figueroa, George Boyd, Papiss Cisse, Oumar Niasse and Nedum Onuoha also featuring. Rooney’s former England teammate Emile Heskey has appeared as well, underlining the level of experience involved.

The team’s profile surged after a 13–0 win over South Liverpool in which Papiss Cisse arrived late, scored seven in the second half and even had a penalty saved. In the background, the phone of organiser Steven Ireland has been buzzing.

Speaking about the interest, Ireland said: “My phone hasn’t stopped. I’ve got people going, ‘how do I get involved, how do I sign up?’”

He continued: “I just want to be wary of not bringing too many people, because I want it to be a mix of the proper old vets with maybe four or five pros each time. But it is great fun, even as an incentive during the week to prepare for it. That’s what it’s like now.”

According to talkSPORT, Wayne Rooney is among the ex-professionals keen to join the ranks, with former UFC champion Conor McGregor also having enquired about a game. Alongside their league fixtures, the group meet for nine-a-side each week, giving returning names a regular route back to the grass.

For Rooney, an appearance would mark another step back toward the pitch following his charity and legends run-outs, this time in a community setting with familiar faces from the Premier League years. It would also fit the spirit of Wythenshawe Vets’ recent transformation, which began over the summer when Ireland joined and started inviting retired pros to bolster a core of long-standing veterans.

Whether Rooney pulls the boots on for a single cameo or something more regular, the prospect alone explains why the club’s Sunday fixtures have begun to draw a crowd. If it happens, it would be another chapter in a career that keeps finding new ways to stay close to the game.
