Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney couldn’t believe the shocking comments made by Liverpool star Mohamed Salah following the Reds’ 3-3 draw against Leeds United.

Salah, who rarely speaks to the press following matches, launched into an explosive rant in which he criticized his club and head coach Arne Slot.

Rooney addressed the Salah situation on the BBC’s The Wayne Rooney Show.

“It’s absolutely disrespectful to his teammates, to his manager, to the fans,” Rooney said. “I think it’s incredible that he come out with what he did.”

Liverpool took action against Salah by excluding him from the UEFA Champions League travelling squad. Though he trained with teammates on Monday, he was not named to the 19-player squad to face Inter Milan ahead of Tuesday’s match at San Siro.

Rooney has been critical of Salah throughout the 2025-26 season. The Egyptian forward has scored five goals through 19 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions.

“Time catches up with all of us, obviously, when you’re playing,” Rooney said. “I think this season he hasn’t looked at his best, he hasn’t looked at his sharpest. I’ve been quite vocal about that over the last couple of months. Clearly, Arne Slot has seen that, and he’s put him on the bench.”

Rooney believes that Salah’s comments will not go down well with his Liverpool teammates.

“He’s one of the main players, if not the main player for Liverpool over the last few years,” Rooney said. “You want to see him roll his sleeves up and say okay, ‘I’ll show ya.’ To have that arrogance to say that he doesn’t have to earn his place because he should play, he’s already earned his place… you need to be at your best every week to try to stay in your team. That’s part of being in a team sport. If I was one of his teammates, I wouldn’t be happy at all with what he said. This is where Liverpool need him most. He’s thrown Liverpool under the bus with his words.”

Rooney on Salah: ‘He’s Absolutely Destroying His Legacy'

Salah has won the Premier League twice and helped Liverpool to win the 2019 Champions League final. Yet, Rooney believes that Salah is self-sabotaging his own legacy.

"He's absolutely destroying his legacy," Rooney stated. "The legacy that he can have at Liverpool Football Club is massive. Some of the absolute legends who've played for Liverpool, he's right up there with them. I think it would be sad for him to throw it all away. How he's gone about not playing and being put on the bench, he's gone about it all wrong."

Salah's comments have cast doubt over his future at Liverpool. It is unclear whether Salah will play for Liverpool before he departs for the Africa Cup of Nations on December 15.

Rooney made 595 career appearances for Manchester United. He was part of the United team that won the 2008 Champions League final.
