West Ham United began the 2025/26 campaign with two heavy defeats, but did bounce back with an impressive 3-0 win away at Nottingham Forest. Despite the recent win, West Ham appear determined to add new players, and according to Fabrizio Romano, they are exploring a move to sign Igor Julio from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Despite the 3-0 win at Forest, West Ham were comprehensively beaten 3-0 at Sunderland and 5-1 at home to Chelsea, exposing defensive frailties. These two heavy defeats showed the club does need defensive reinforcements, and it appears Igor fits the bill.
Former Brighton and Hove Albion coach Inigo Calderón recently praised the Brazilian defender: “Igor Julio is an animal, a centre back that I really like,” he said.
The first two games this season showed the limitations in the West Ham team, and it appears a player like Julio could provide much-needed stability to their back-line.
West Ham have been active in this window, signing players such as Callum Wilson, Mads Hermansen, and El Hadji Malick Diouf. The performances against Sunderland and Chelsea were alarming, and despite the improvements against Forest, it’s clear they need to improve their defence.
Igor is comfortable in possession and will bring calmness to a chaotic West Ham defence. He reads the game well and is physical, which will be huge benefits for Graham Potter. His dribbling ability ensures he can help start effective attacks.
