Tottenham Hotspur boys stepped up to the occasion on Thursday evening and reached the UEFA Europa League semi-finals. They will now face Norwegian surprise-package Bodo/Glimt in the semi-finals of the competition next month.
When it comes to their domestic campaign, the Lilywhites have simply not been good enough. Spurs are in the bottom half of the Premier League table, registering an embarrassing 17 losses in the league this season.
It has become increasingly evident that they are in desperate need of greater squad depth ahead of next season. Chairman Daniel Levy has already started targeting players for next season. Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen, who has been a revelation in the Premier League since joining from Juventus last year.
The teenager’s displays have turned the heads of recruiters across Europe after an impressive season with Bournemouth. Dean Huijsen has been a big part of the Cherries’ challenge for Europe, forming a formidable partnership with Ilya Zabarnyi at the heart of their defence. He is also one of the first names on Andoni Iraola’s teamsheet.
Several Premier League clubs and European outfits are vying for the centre-back’s signature, with the recently-capped Spanish international having a £50m release clause in his contract.
Bournemouth are wary of the growing interest in Huijsen and their plans regarding the defender should be music to the ears of his suitors, including Tottenham. According to an exclusive report from TBR Football, the Cherries want the Spaniard’s deal done quickly so they can reinvest the money on his replacement. However, there is no ‘pressure on the player’ and he won’t be rushed into anything.
This update on Huijsen should cause a stir at Tottenham, who are eyeing defensive reinforcements. Cristian Romero is heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, while there is no timescale on Radu Dragusin’s return following an ACL rupture in February. Despite the acquisition of Kevin Danso on loan from RC Lens during the winter window, a centre-back to improve the first XI next term would be an absolute must.
Huijsen, in that regard, would be a fantastic option for Tottenham to consider. At 20, he fits the criteria of signings Levy has made in recent years—young, dynamic and high-potential players. The Amsterdam-born talent now has a year of top-flight experience as well, showing his quality by marshalling the backline of an exciting Bournemouth side.
However, with Liverpool and Arsenal also keen on the defender’s signature, Spurs face a challenge of convincing Huijsen to become a part of their project at White Hart Lane.
