Ange Postecoglou makes honest admission on his uncertain future at Tottenham after final day defeat to Brighton

Ange Postecoglou is still not safe as Tottenham Hotspur boss despite guiding the club UEFA Europa League glory.

The Greek-Aussie tactician ended the North London club’s 17-year wait for a trophy last week as his side overcame Manchester United 1-0 at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao. As a result, they have qualified for the Champions League, giving the passionate and loyal supporters immense joy after what has been a dreadful domestic campaign.

While the Europa League success and subsequent Champions League qualification will provide a boost to the whole club, both financially and after ending their trophy drought, it has not offered Ange Postecoglou any guarantees. He would have wanted to build on the European success by finishing the league season on a high note on Sunday, but it didn’t happen as Brighton and Hove Albion trounced Spurs 4-1 at home.

This saw the Lilywhites register a staggering 22 league defeats for the season, finishing a lowly 17th on the table. Postecoglou faced the media after the 4-1 defeat to Brighton at home. When asked if sacking him would endanger the unity between the club and fans that has been built after the Europa League success, the Tottenham boss commented (h/t Football London):

“I will be honest I have been finding it really weird talking about my future when we have done something unprecedented. I have had to answer the questions because no one else at the club is in the position to do so I guess. But I can’t answer that question about me and my future. Like I said, part of me is thinking ‘why am I even being asked that question?’ But it is what it is.

“I have got no doubt though that this could be a real defining moment for this club because wherever I have been I have made an impact where I have brought success to a club that hasn’t had it for a while.

“You just have to look at those clubs’ trajectory even after I left, they are still competing for things. I really think this is a moment in time where this club could push on and be a real contender for honours on a yearly basis.”

Daniel Levy could be in dilemma over whether to sack or back Postecoglou following the Europa League triumph in Bilbao. The Tottenham chairman had been expected to axe the veteran tactician even if European glory had been delivered due to the underwhelming league campaign, which has ended with Spurs in 17th.

The crazy scenes at the San Mames Stadium, followed by the trophy parade on the streets of North London, have certainly changed the minds of many fans, who are now demanding the Australian to stay for another year. Ange himself has publicly stated he wants to carry on, having teased during the bus parade that “all the best television series, season three is better than season two.”

The decision now lies with Levy. He has already spoken to several managers to replace Ange at the helm. But after watching the connect between the fans and our gaffer, it will not be an easy task to replace him.
