Peter Schmeichel shared his thoughts on Gianluigi Donnarumma’s performance after the goalkeeper made his Manchester City debut in their 3-0 derby win over United.

Donnarumma marked his first appearance for City with a strong showing, making several important stops and keeping a clean sheet.

Erling Haaland, who had just enjoyed an impressive international break, scored twice, while Phil Foden also got on the scoresheet.

One of the top goalkeepers of his era, Schmeichel spoke about what stood out to him from the Italian star’s first outing with City.

Speaking after the match, the Dane singled out how quickly Guardiola has put his faith in Donnarumma.

He said to Premier League media: “Donnarumma has shown exactly why Pep Guardiola has signed him.

“We’ve already seen why he is here. They trust him, you can see that. He has played really well this first 45 minutes.”

Schmeichel did not hold back on United either, saying there has been little sign of progress under Ruben Amorim.

“Looking at the team I can’t help but feel it’s moved nowhere. It’s just the same.

“Manchester City didn’t need to play exceptionally well. City aren’t back to the side that were winning championships – they just gave it to them today.

“If you tally up the chances, United may have probably had more.”

How Gianluigi Donnarumma fared against Manchester United

If you were to choose any player to face a tough start in the derby, it would be a Champions League winner still in his prime.

Donnarumma handled the occasion well, staying calm and taking control of his area when needed.

He did enough that even some United supporters took notice of how good he looked.

The Italian made a sharp stop to deny Benjamin Sesko early on, then used his size again later to keep out Bryan Mbeumo with City already 2-0 up.

Donnarumma finished with two saves – one from close range – along with three punches clear. He also made three clearances and won an aerial challenge.

In terms of passing, Donnarumma completed 15 out of 27 attempts and connected on six of his 18 long passes forward.
