What's plaguing suddenly struggling Bayern Munich?

In his first season as Bayern Munich head coach, Vincent Kompany got off to a flying start, winning his first five games, including a jaw-dropping 6-1 win over Holstein Kiel and a 9-2 victory against Dinamo Zagreb in Champions League.

Recently, however, the team has struggled.

In the past five matches, Bayern has drawn 1-1 with Bayer Leverkusen, lost 1-0 to Aston Villa in the Champions League, drawn 3-3 with Eintracht Frankfurt, defeated Stuttgart 4-0 and lost to Barcelona 4-1 in Champions League.

So, what has happened to Bayern Munich? How does Kompany's side go from outscoring its opponents 25-5 in the first five games to winning only one of its past five while being outscored 9-8?

Uncharacteristically poor performances have plagued Bayern this season.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is usually one of the best in the world when it comes to anticipating situations and stopping shots. But he has a 42% save percentage across all competitions this season, uncharacteristically low for a goalkeeper of his level.

In the 4-1 loss to Barcelona, the Spanish side only had four shots on goal, all of them resulting in goals against Neuer.

Midfielder Joshua Kimmich, who usually controls the tempo of the midfield with ease, has not played up to his form of recent seasons.

Kompany has also had to deal with injuries to key players Jamal Musiala (hip) and Aleksandar Pavlovic (broken collarbone), forcing him to alter his lineup.

Tactically, Bayern has struggled against counterattacking teams. Kompany tends to play a high defensive line when in possession, leaving the team exposed on the break. Barcelona's Raphinha scored a hat trick against Bayern, with his third goal catching Bayern out on a counterattack.

Unfortunately for Kompany and his players, the season does not get any easier, with matches against Benfica, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund in November. This will be the second big stretch of games to test the German side.

For Bayern to take back the Bundesliga crown from Bayer Leverkusen, the club will have to rediscover the form it showed to start the season.
