Germany head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup looking to move past two disappointing tournaments.
The four-time world champions were knocked out in the group stage at both the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, a major contrast to their earlier success on the international stage.
Before those exits, Germany had reached at least the semifinals in four straight World Cups between 2002 and 2014, including lifting the trophy in Brazil in 2014.
Now, there is renewed optimism around the national team under manager Julian Nagelsmann.
The former Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig coach was appointed Germany head coach in September 2023 following the departure of Hansi Flick.
Nagelsmann initially signed on to lead the team through Euro 2024 before later extending his stay as Germany began preparing for the 2026 World Cup.
Germany’s squad announcement has already attracted attention due to several reported leaks in recent days.
Multiple reports have suggested veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer could make a surprise return after previously stepping away from international football following Euro 2024. Young talents such as Said El Mala and Lennart Karl have also reportedly been included in the provisional plans, while players like Niclas Fullkrug and Yann Aurel Bisseck could miss out.
Germany will officially announce their squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on May 21. The announcement is scheduled for 7:00 AM EDT.
The German Football Federation had originally planned to reveal the squad earlier in May, but the announcement was delayed to allow Nagelsmann more time to assess injured players and monitor the final Bundesliga fixtures.
Germany have been drawn into Group E for the tournament alongside Ivory Coast, Ecuador and Curacao.
Based on recent reports, Germany’s possible squad could include a strong mix of experienced internationals and young attacking talent.
Several final decisions are still expected before the official reveal, especially regarding player fitness and late injury concerns.
