Brian White guided home an 87th-minute header and the Vancouver Whitecaps continued their perfect start under new manager Jesper Sorensen in a 2-1 win over the visiting LA Galaxy on Sunday.
Samuel Adekugbe also scored in the home opener for the Whitecaps (2-0-0, 6 points), who parted with previous manager Vanni Sartini after he reached the playoffs in three of his four seasons, but failed to advance past the first round.
Sorensen has been aided in his early MLS tenure by facing a 10-man Portland Timbers side and a defending MLS Cup champion Galaxy team without key players Joseph Paintsill (quad strain) and Riqui Puig (ACL tear).
Gabriel Pec scored his first goal of the season for the Galaxy (0-2-0, 0 points), who remain without Paintsil for at least a few more weeks and Puig for most of the season.
Manager Greg Vanney's defense looked better organized in the second half, but still fell victim to Pedro Vite's exceptional play on the right flank that led to both goals.
The latter came from an innocent-looking sequence, when Vite curled in an inswinging cross from beyond the corner of the penalty area.
But the ball was perfectly measured for White's run, and with center back Zanka caught between marking two men, White sent a glancing header into the left corner past Novak Micovic.
Vite had helped open the scoring 84 minutes earlier when he made an excellent run down the right, ran onto Mathias Laborda's throughball and drove a low cross toward the near post.
Micovic deflected that cross with his leg, but Adekugbe cleaned up the rebound.
The Galaxy leveled from a similar attack down their left flank in the 39th minute.
Miguel Berry eventually cut into the penalty area, outmuscled a defender and then poked a cross toward Pec near the penalty area ahead of goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka.
Pec composed himself then sent an excellent shot through traffic into the bottom right corner.

Manchester United have reportedly translated their interest in Morten Hjulmand into action by tabling a concrete offer. The 26-year-old was named Sporting CP captain after cementing himself as a pillar at the club. The Dane had joined the Lisbon-based giants in the summer of 2023, making the move from Serie A club Lecce under the tutelage of Ruben Amorim. Therefore, the 40-year-old boss has been keen to reunite with Hjulmand at Carrington, considering him the right profile to bolster the midfield ranks. Man United launch offer for Morten Hjulmand As reported on Monday, Man Utd have decided to send Toby Collyer out on loan, which should make room for a new arrival in the middle of the park. Aside from the young Englishman, Amorim’s midfield department includes club captain Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte. According to Calciomercato, United have submitted an offer worth €40 million for Hjulmand who would be delighted to reconnect with Amorim. However, this bid is unlikely to be accepted, as it remains far off from Sporting’s asking price. The Portuguese giants began the summer by asking for the full value of the player’s release clause, that is €80 million. Needless to say, this figure is unrealistic, so the club has gradually lowered the bar, but it is now believed that they’re seeking €50 million for the Dane. Man Utd have company in Hjulmand race Moreover, Man Utd must be willing to battle other suitors for Hjulmand’s favour, particularly Juventus who are said to be keen on landing the midfielder who has been described as ‘fiery’ by his international teammate, Thomas Delaney. Hence, we can expect the battle for Hjulmand’s services to heat up in the coming days and weeks. The Red Devils might be caught up in their attempts to sign a new centre-forward, but they must also keep an eye on this track so they aren’t left behind in the race.
The Sacramento Kings have been busy this offseason as they have made multiple moves to upgrade their roster to chase a playoff spot in the Western Conference next season. It all started in the 2025 draft for the Kings where they traded into the first round to select Nique Clifford and then used their second-round pick to draft Maxime Raynaud. They then landed Dennis Schroder in free agency via a sign-and-trade deal with the Detroit Pistons to upgrade their starting point guard position. Sacramento has also been linked to many other players in free agency this offseason, including Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga who is a restricted free agent. If the Kings want Kuminga, they will have to acquire him via a sign-and-trade with the Warriors and if they are able to do so, Sactown Sports 1140’s Allen Stiles believes that they will move on from one of their star players. “I believe that there is a handshake agreement between DeMar DeRozan and the Sacramento Kings. That is my belief,” Stiles said. “If Jonathan Kuminga is acquired by the Sacramento Kings, the Sacramento Kings will get their butts in gear as far as getting DeMar DeRozan to another team.” This is a bold statement by Stiles but one that makes sense since DeRozan and Kuminga play the same position. Of course, DeRozan has been in trade rumors since the end of last season for the Kings but he has not had a large trade market thus far which has kept him on Sacramento’s roster. That may change if they are able to land Kuminga though as they would want Kuminga in their starting lineup which would force them to move DeRozan. If this ends up being the case and Stiles is right, the Kings may not receive a large trade package in return for their veteran forward but it would allow them to open up playing time for Kuminga if they are able to acquire him from Golden State.
Only eight plate appearances into his New York Yankees career, Ryan McMahon has already been more productive than the team’s previous third base options. What might sound hyperbolic or outright false at first glance is actually true, at least from a certain point of view. Analytics — specifically, Wins Above Replacement — proves that argument, and it’s one that Yankees manager Aaron Boone should be ashamed of. McMahon went 2-for-3 with a two-run double in Sunday’s victory over the Phillies, giving him four hits in his first eight at-bats. FanGraphs ruled that McMahon is already worth 0.2 fWAR through two games in a Yankees uniform. Amazingly, McMahon has a higher fWAR than the trio of DJ LeMahieu, Oswald Peraza, and Jorbit Vivas, who have played a combined 148 games in the infield thus far. LeMahieu provided -0.1 fWAR over 45 games before being unceremoniously cut earlier this month, while Vivas (-0.2) is currently at Triple-A. Peraza and his -0.6 fWAR remain on the active roster, though he’s shifted into a bench role. Baseball-Reference has been slightly more generous, giving Peraza -0.2 bWAR. Boone stuck with LeMahieu and Peraza until he couldn’t anymore, and it’s partly why the Yankees have dropped to 5 1/2 games back in the AL East. Injuries and age took their toll on LeMahieu, who only played second after returning from calf and hip problems. Peraza owns a .152 average and .452 OPS in 170 plate appearances. We’ll see if McMahon can elevate the Yankees, who open a pivotal four-game set with the rival Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.
CLEVELAND — Emmanuel Clase is officially off the trading block, and not for the reasons the Cleveland Guardians might have hoped. After Clase was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of MLB’s sports-betting investigation on Monday, Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti acknowledged that the high-profile closer wouldn't be a part of any trades before the upcoming MLB trade deadline later this week. "No," Antonetti responded to reporters on Monday afternoon when asked if Clase would potentially be traded. It's a blow to the Guardians, who likely could have received a loaded return had they chosen to move the 27-year-old right-hander. However, with MLB's investigation underway, Clase is now on leave until Aug. 31. It is Major League Baseball's second look at the franchise in terms of potential sports betting following Luis Ortiz being placed on the same kind of leave earlier in July. That means Cleveland is down two relievers, including Clase and his 24 saves posted so far this season. "I think what's important is that we understand what the reality is and figure out how do we move forward from here," Antonetti said. "That's really the focus. "Both guys won't be available to us in the near term, and we need to figure out a way to overcome that. It's not too dissimilar to the moment when players are injured and they're not available to us. We have to find the next group to step up and shoulder a load and find a way to win games. That's really what we're focused on." Antonetti also told reporters that the two relievers will be the last Cleveland players investigated for this type of potential infringement. "We've been informed by Major League Baseball. They were very clear to let us know that they don't expect any other players or staff members," Antonetti said. While Clase may not be off the trading list, Antonetti told reporters it was still very "active" in terms of other teams reaching out to the Guardians around the 6 p.m. (Eastern) Thursday trade deadline. "We're in constant dialogue with a lot of teams," Antonetti said. "We had a lot of dialogue up through this morning and certainly had dialogue over the last few hours. My expectation is that it will continue over the next few days." Antonetti didn't offer a timeline in terms of when Cleveland might hear official rulings from MLB on the investigations. "What I know is that the suspensions are in place through August 31 and then we'll have to see where things are happening," Antonetti said. "Obviously, for everyone, I think you'd prefer to have the clarity sooner rather than later. But I recognize it's a complicated issue and usually baseball has a number of steps they need to work through to complete that investigation."
