Barcelona announced on Friday that Xavi Hernandez would no longer be managing the club for the final year of his contract, although it came as little surprise. It did not take long for his replacement to be confirmed, albeit not officially, as former Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick.

The 59-year-old is set to sign a two-year deal with Barcelona next week, and with him will come two coaches into the staff, replacing Sergio Alegre and Oscar Hernandez. Toni Tapalovic rose to fame as Bayern’s goalkeeping coach for 12 years, where he turned Manuel Neuer into the best in the world, in the eyes of many.

His exit from Bayern was controversial, and Neuer described it as like ‘having his heart ripped out’, after the decision was taken by the higher management at Bayern due to differences of opinion in his methods. Since, he has been unattached.

As a player, Tapalovic bounces around the lower divisions in Germany, having come through the system at Schalke. After a 13-year career mostly as a back-up, he retired in 2011, before taking the Bayern goalkeeping coach role. Thus far, it appears that Tapalovic will be an assistant to Flick, rather than goalkeeping coach, as Barcelona already have Jose Ramon de la Fuente in place, who has been in his position for 13 years.

Meanwhile Marcus Sorg played for 15 years as a forward in the lower divisions, starting his coaching career in 1999 upon his retirement. After a three-year stint as Ulm head coach, he began coaching the youth ranks at Freiburg, and took over the head coaching role for a brief four-month spell, leading to his sacking in 2011.

Sorg went back to working int he youth ranks, now at Bayern, before being named under-19 coach of the German national team in 2013, winning the under-19 Euros the following year. In 2016 he became an assistant coach for the senior German side, and left with Flick in 2023 when they were sacked.

Both will likely have to contend with a language barrier, although if Flick has been preparing for the job as long as is thought, since January or February, both were likely aware of the moves. Flick will have two experienced heads alongside him though, in contrast to the relative inexperience of Xavi’s coaching staff.
