Manchester City’s starting goalkeeper Ederson will not feature against Wolverhampton in the first round of the 2025/26 Premier League season. The Brazilian goalkeeper did not even travel with the squad, as behind-the-scenes moves continue to unfold in real time.
Ederson joined Manchester City from Benfica in 2017. Manager Pep Guardiola was searching for a goalkeeper comfortable playing out from the back, similar to Manuel Neuer during his time at Bayern Munich. Joe Hart had fallen out of favor, while backup William Caballero was being tested.
Ederson proved a perfect fit for City, helping the club secure five Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy. However, his future at the club now appears uncertain. According to Fabrizio Romano, Ederson will miss the Wolverhampton game as negotiations with Galatasaray are ongoing, with the Turkish side having submitted an official bid.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are reportedly favorites to sign star goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who could soon become available either on a free transfer or through a move to another top European club. Pieces are being moved behind the courtains to make the transfer happen.
As negotiations continue, Ederson has been left out of the match until his future is finalized. This is not uncommon; he is not the only Premier League player to miss the first game of the season. Earlier on Saturday, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak was also sidelined.
According to Brazilian journalist João Castelo Branco from ESPN, Ederson did not arrive at the stadium with the team. Backup goalkeepers Ortega and Trafford traveled with the squad on the team bus.
"I'm in Wolverhampton. I didn't see Ederson arrive with the team. Ortega and Trafford are here." - he posted on X.
