Scotland international Scott McTominay has had a fantastic debut season in Serie A and deserves to be the season’s MVP regardless of whether Napoli win the Scudetto.
The former Manchester United midfielder has scored 11 goals and provided five assists in 32 league appearances since moving to the Stadio Maradona in a €30.5m deal from Manchester United.
His quality and physicality helped the Partenopei to challenge defending champions Inter for the Serie A title, pleasing casino users who predicted a hard-fought Scudetto battle between the Nerazzurri and the Partenopei.
McTominay’s contribution has gone beyond his goals and assists as he’s proved to be a crucial tactical weapon for Antonio Conte.
The Scotland international has played multiple roles in league matches this season: holding midfielder, attacking midfielder, and even left winger. McT has done it all with outstanding quality, leaving his mark in the most important games of the campaign.
The 28-year-old has had seven goal contributions in the last five matches, scoring five goals and providing two assists.
His latest two assists against Genoa were still insufficient for the Partenopei to beat Genoa at the Stadio Maradona. The 2-2 draw allowed Inter to move just one point below them with two games remaining.
“We have to stay calm, this is not the time to panic,” said McTominay
“Genoa are a strong team, they scored two good goals and we have to look at what we did wrong there.”
“It’s important to stay calm, keep doing what we’re doing, and then see where the end of the season gets us.”
Despite the latest disappointing result and a title race that will be uncertain until the very end of the season, it’s clear that McTominay deserves massive recognition for his individual performances this season.
His impact at Napoli has been so remarkable that he deserves the Serie A MVP award regardless of the Scudetto winner this term.
“McTominay is clearly much stronger now than when he arrived,” Conte said at a recent press conference.
“He also feels more complete and knowledgeable, and he’s reaching a key stage in his career where he needs to decide his direction. He never had a primary role at Man United, while here we gave him one. He’s worked hard and now he’s a complete player. His improvement has been shared by the whole team. Otherwise, it would be hard to explain how we’ve earned 74 points.”
Napoli’s final two games of the season will be against Parma away and Cagliari at home, while Inter will face Lazio at home and Como away.
