Why Roma must sell Spinazzola in January

Roma will be working on Leonardo Spinazzola’s sale in the January transfer window to boost their budget for a new centre-back as they currently have less than €2m available to invest.

Spinazzola’s agent Davide Lippi has confirmed that his client will leave Roma soon. The defender’s current deal at the Stadio Olimpico runs out in June 2024 and will not sign a contract extension.

Lippi, son of former Italy coach Marcello, has also added that Spinazzola could leave the capital this month.

Galatasaray have been linked with Italy international, whose sale would help the Giallorossi boost their budget in the winter transfer window.

As reported by all Italian media, including Sky Sport and TMW, Roma have circa €1.5m available for new signings in January due to Financial Fair Play restrictions. It is a fee the Giallorossi should use to pay the salary of any potential new signing and agent fees, too.

What Rome earn from Spinazzola’s sale and the money they save from his wages would contribute to boosting Roma’s budget for the current transfer window. This is why Renato Sanches’ return to PSG this month should not be ruled out, even if José Mourinho recently claimed he had “no info” regarding the Portuguese midfielder’s exit.

The Special One needs a new centre-back in the winter transfer window as he was forced to play two players out of position – Zaki Celik and Bryan Cristante – in a Coppa Italia Round of 16 with Cremonese on Wednesday night.
