Willem II officially sign Manchester United striker

Willem II have managed to successful secure one of Manchester United more exciting attacking talents in a bid to bring fire-power to the club this season.

Taking to their official website, the Eredivisie side have confirmed the signing of Chido Obi on loan for the rest of the season.

Manchester United’s ability to lure Obi away from Arsenal back in 2024 was seen as one of the more eye-catching academy coups of recent years.

Born in Glostrup, Denmark, to a Nigerian father and Danish mother, Chido Obi actually began his international youth career exploring the possibility of representing England, having relocated to London at 14 and earned a couple of caps at Under-16 level.

That flirtation proved short-lived.

By early 2023 he had recommitted to the country of his birth, going on to represent Denmark exclusively from Under-16 level upwards and racking up over 25 caps in the years since.

His move to Manchester came after a prolific spell in Arsenal’s academy, where he once broke Folarin Balogun’s Under-18 scoring record and drew comparisons to Victor Osimhen for his combination of physicality and finishing.

Life in first-team contention has proven far harder to come by since, and Obi’s route back to regular football now lies elsewhere.

Now, Obi has completed a season-long loan, allowing for the next step in his prefessional development,

Willem II’s own connection to developing young Scandinavian strikers runs deep, having previously loaned a teenage Alexander Isak from Borussia Dortmund back in 2019, a move that helped launch his career towards the top of the European game.

The Tilburg club were only promoted back to the Eredivisie last season and currently sit with one draw and two defeats from their opening three fixtures, leaving them short of goals as they fight to establish themselves back in the top flight.

Obi’s multiple international allegiances, Denmark, Nigeria and briefly England, mean whichever country ultimately wins the race for his long-term international future may well be decided by how his season in the Netherlands unfolds.
