It’s easy to forget just how much pressure comes with a £100m-plus move, but Florian Wirtz has now opened up on exactly that after reflecting on his first season with us.

The German international arrived from Bayer Leverkusen with huge expectations, yet his early months didn’t quite match the hype, something he’s now addressed directly as he looks ahead to a crucial end to the campaign.

Wirtz reflects on difficult Liverpool start

Speaking via BBC Sport, the 22-year-old didn’t shy away from the reality of his early struggles, admitting it took time to adjust to the demands of life at Anfield.

He said: “It wasn’t an easy phase.”

That honesty is important because we all saw glimpses of his quality, but consistency took time, particularly in a side already dealing with injuries and disruption following the Brighton defeat.

The former Leverkusen playmaker went further in explaining how that period has actually helped his development, adding: “It’s sometimes good that things don’t always go upwards and that you experience a dip and grow stronger because of it.”

For us, that mindset is exactly what you want from a player expected to shape the next phase of this team.

Signs Wirtz can lead Liverpool forward

The attacking midfielder also made it clear that adaptation was key, especially physically and mentally in the Premier League.

He explained: “That’s how I see it now as well – it has made me a bit stronger. I had to overcome resistance and adapt. I had to learn to become stronger and hold onto the ball.”

That growth has already started to show, particularly after his first goal against Wolves sparked a run of six goals in ten games, giving us a glimpse of what he can become when fully settled.

German media have already described him as ‘outstanding’ on international duty, while Hugo Ekitike has openly admitted he’s the teammate he most enjoys playing alongside, highlighting the natural chemistry forming in our attack.

When you combine that with the wider vision of building around players like Wirtz, Ekitike and Alexander Isak, it’s clear why there’s so much belief in what’s coming next.

With a huge FA Cup clash against Manchester City on the horizon, we’re now seeing a player who has come through that difficult early phase and looks ready to deliver when it matters most.
