Wolverhampton Wanderers appear to have agreed a deal in principle to sign Angel Gomes on loan. As first reported by Fabrizio Romano, Wolves have secured approval from Olympique Marseille for a season-long loan worth £866,000, with an option to buy set at around £6m. While formal documentation and signatures are still pending, the deal is described as “here we go” territory, which signals confidence from all sides that Gomes will soon be heading to Molineux.
Angel Gomes, still just 25, arrives with a reputation built on technical quality, spatial awareness, and composure in possession. He has previously been described as “progressive,” capable of operating on the left, right, through the middle or as an attacking midfielder, Gomes offers Wolves a profile they have often lacked: a midfielder comfortable receiving under pressure and progressing play through tight central areas.
Across his most recent top-flight seasons in France, Gomes has consistently ranked highly in progressive passes, pass completion, and chances created. Though not a prolific goalscorer, he has added three goals to his tally in Ligue 1 this season.
For Wolves, this move feels low-risk and strategically sound. The loan structure allows the club to assess Gomes’ adaptation to Premier League intensity, while the £6m buy option represents strong value should he settle quickly.
Under Rob Edwards, a technically secure midfielder who can operate between the lines could prove vital. Gomes’ experience in Ligue 1 and European competition also adds a level of tactical maturity that the squad needs in their fight for survival.
This is not a blockbuster signing; however, it could be a clever one. If Gomes finds rhythm and confidence in English football, Wolves may have positioned themselves to secure a high-upside talent at a modest price.
