A European trophy is heading back to North London this season. Some would be quick to assume that it might be Arsenal winning silverware after competing on multiple fronts for a major trophy. But to everyone’s surprise, it is their arch rivals Tottenham that have managed to exceed all expectations and win the Europa league after enduring a dismal domestic campaign.
The Lilywhites beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final to end a 17-year wait for silverware on Wednesday night. It was a historic night for all everyone involved with the club, as Ange Postecoglou’s men also managed to bring a European trophy back to N17 after 41 years. Winning the competition also means that Spurs have qualified for Champions League football for next season.
This season has been full ups and down for the Lilywhites. But Big Ange and his players ensured that they ended the campaign on a high by putting an end to the trophy drought. The Australian manager has also given fans a lasting memory of success that could just kickstart a new era at Hotspur Way.
If there is one man that could not express his emotions openly after Tottenham’s victory against Man United, it is Roy Keane. The legendary player is a self-admitted Spurs fan and he could not help but take a slight dig at Arsenal after the Lilywhites managed to win the Europa League at the San Mames Stadium.
Speaking on CBS Sports (as transcribed by Football365), Roy Keane said,
“Spurs have won more than Arsenal this season. When you think of the clubs out there, Spurs get criticised as much as anyone. They certainly were not Spursy. They defended really well, their attacking play wasn’t great but it doesn’t really matter.”
The Man United legend added,
“For all the critics over the past few years, we’ve said they’ve got a lovely stadium but it’s all about winning trophies. Now they can get their hands on that trophy tonight and really enjoy it. When the players come back for pre-season they knew they’re in the Champions League and the knock-on effect for the club is fantastic.”
Roy Keane suggested that Tottenham have won more than Arsenal this season and the Lilywhites were not ‘Spursy’ when it mattered the most. The legendary player admitted that Spurs defended well and certainly delivered on the big stage. Keane also pointed out that the North London club has endured a lot of criticism for not winning, but they managed to get over the line this time. However, Keane also urged the players to not get complacent and build on the Europa League victory.
For context, Tottenham are 17th in the Premier League table and they have registered 21 league losses this season. Whereas, Arsenal have lost the same amount of Premier League games as Liverpool (4) and are sitting 2nd in the league table. But it is the trophy count that matters at the end of the day. Qualifying for Champions League football every season will not mean anything if a club does not manage to win trophies along the way.
Now, the Lilywhites will need to kickstart a new era and close the gap on their rivals next season. But first, Daniel Levy must sort out the managerial situation at the club before heading into the summer transfer window. It was reported earlier that Levy would sack Ange Postecoglou once the season ended, irrespective of the outcome in the Europa league final.
